Java-Log a boon to the environment
Firelog made from recycled coffee grounds diverts waste from landfills and reduces emissions
(Ottawa, Canada — September, 2004) —
Java Products Corporation has developed a way to benefit the environment
using the world’s most consumed beverage. A worldwide industry first,
Java-Log is made from recycled spent coffee grounds, and is an
excellent alternative for conscientious consumers who want to enjoy
their fireplace and make environmentally friendly choices at the same
time.
Java-Log is the only product of its kind composed of 100
per cent natural ingredients (wood, coffee and vegetable by-products).
It is seven times cleaner burning, emits 96 per cent less residue, 85
per cent less carbon monoxide, and 86% less creosote deposits and than
regular wood, while releasing no chemical scent. Java-Log also produces
25 per cent more energy and over three times the flame capacity
compared to wood (per unit of wood).
"Today’s consumer wants a quality product that is
efficient and environmentally friendly. Java-Log meets this need," said
Marcel Sbrollini, President & CEO of Java Products Corporation "It’s
not only a superior product — it burns brighter and more beautifully
than wood — but it diverts waste from landfills. Plus, it plays a role
in preventing the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere."
Java-Log is composed entirely of natural products. Java-Log recently underwent extensive testing by OMNI-Test Laboratories Inc. whereby OMNI concluded that Java-Log is a superior product, when it tested for air emissions, burning properties, and conducted a residue analysis and fuel analysis.
"After extensive testing, we are extremely confident
that Java-Log is very safe to use as directed, burns well, and has
substantially lower air emissions compared to wood," said Dr. Jim
Houck, President, OMNI Consulting Services Inc.
Each year the bulk of spent coffee grounds are sent
directly to landfills, and Java-Log diverts this waste by re-using it
as solid fuel product. Java-Log can also help reduce the emission of
the harmful greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), which is released into
the atmosphere when spent coffee grounds rot in landfills. In fact, if
all wood-based firelog products were replaced with Java-Logs, the
amount of annual CO2 emissions in North America would potentially be
reduced by 7.7 million kilograms.
After being awarded one of Time Magazine’s
"Coolest inventions of 2003", Java-Log is now the first and only
firelog sold in premier health food chains such as Whole Foods and Wild
Oats. It is also available at Loblaws, Home Hardware and Home Depot,
across the U.S. retail grocery supermarket channel, and at mass
merchandisers like Target. The suggested retail price is between $3.49
and $3.99 per log. Java-Log can also be purchased online at www.java-log.com.
